Conclusion Options for Final Speech

What do you want the purpose of your speech to be? Do you want to:
¡re-emphasize the far-ranging impact or the elegance of your solution?
¡stress the importance of your topic in the listeners’ daily lives?
¡leave the audience with a question to think about?
¡tie your conclusion to a question you asked or a statement you made at the beginning of your speech?
¡end with a recommendation, a hope for the future, an admonition, a plea, etc?
¡briefly mention something that you weren’t able to include in your presentation and that you hope to discuss in a future presentation?
¡end with a humorous statement related to your topic?

Some Areas to Improve in Your Next Video Log

Here are some areas to improve in your next video log:

-please make sure that your whole video has been uploaded. If part of your video is missing, I can't mark it.
-check the quality of your video (sound and image). If I can't hear or see your video properly, I can't grade you on that section.
-in your reflection, make comments on 2 areas to improve in grammar and 2 areas to improve in pronunciation. Point out specific errors you've made.
-in your reflection, your goals must be specific. It is not good enough to say "I will pay more attention to these problems next time." That is not specific enough.  You can say things like:
  • I will record my video and replay it to myself to listen to my errors.
  • I will hire a tutor to help me (only say this if you will actually do it!)
  • I will go to the websites given at the beginning of the semester and practice problem sounds 10 minutes/day.
  • I will highlight all of my pronunciation errors in my printed copy to remind myself to say them correctly.
  •  I will have a native speaker read through my speech and help me with grammar errors.
  • I will learn English word stress rules and apply them correctly in the future.
  • I will practice problem sounds in front of a mirror to check my jaw and tongue position.
  • When I watch TV, I will imitate the way the speaker pronounces words and sentences.
You must have one goal for grammar and one goal for pronunciation.

Video Log #2

Your second video log reflection is based on "The Rise of the New Global Super-rich", a TED talk by Chrystia Freeland.

These are the steps to follow in order to complete this assigment:

1. Watch the following video:

http://www.ted.com/talks/chrystia_freeland_the_rise_of_the_new_global_super_rich.html

2. Next, record yourself using a webcam responding to the view on the TED video. Your video should be between 3-4 minutes long. Clearly summarize the speaker's thesis; respond (share your opinion) to at least one of her points; and conclude the response. Make sure you use appropriate transitions ( ie. first, second, third, in conclusion).

3. After you record yourself, listen to the recording and reflect on your response using the PMP Video Log Reflection handout.

4. Make sure you post your video onto the blog so I can watch it.

Video log #1---- Alexander

Reflection:

Content
I have made a clear-summarized thesis of this article, and have responded two of the author's key points. In the end of the video, I also have my conclusion of the response.

Nonverbal Behavior
I think I have made a better work on facial expression than before, but my eye contact was not as skillful as expected. May be it was because I was very nervous , and next time I will work hard on this

Grammar, Pronunciation ,Voice & Pace
For this part, I think I have only made several grammar errors, and my voice was clear and confident. However, my intonation was not good ,and I paused several times, which made the speed a little slow.

Goals for Future Video Log
I think that, for the facial expression part, I can practice by myself as much as possible and train myself to be more confident. And I will also pay attention to my specific pronunciation in the future speaking learning, and ask foreign friends to help me make conversations to improve my accent. Besides, I will replay all my pronunciation videos regularly, which can help me fix my problem as quickly as possible and make constant progress.

Video Log Reflection

Content:
In my video log, I first summarized the author’s thesis that playing music in workplace can benefit employees. Secondly, I conclude the author’s main ideas through three parts which are playing music in workplace make worker more productive, playing music in workplace motivated workers and playing music in workplace makes workers connect and understand each other easily. Also I provided one opposite views which argues that music in workplace make employees less interacted with each other. At the end, I concluded my response and gave my own opinion about this topic.

Nonverbal Behavior:
In the video, I only focused on my audience sometimes because I read some part of my summary. Moreover, I think I do not have adequate facial expression and gestures. In the video I was a little bit nervous and I could not show some important gestures to get the attention from my audience. I think I need more practice with eye contacting and body languages, and I would like to learn more about how to make one comfortable when we are recording ourselves.

Grammar, Pronunciation, Voice, & Pace:
In the video, I first made some mistakes on subject verb agreement, such as technology devices make (not makes). Second, I did not recognize the singular and plural word use in this sentence, “which could relax the worker and energize them...” the correct one should be “which could relax the workers and energize them...” Also, I have some intonation problem because there is some pauses between words which make the sentence a little bit choppy. Third, My voice does not sound relax in the video and because of the tension my voice does not sound smooth. Overall, my pace is in a standard level.

Goals for Future Video Logs:
In future video logs, I will practice more times before I record myself and I will avoid reading the summary from the paper and make eye contact to my audience. Also, I will ask someone to be my real audience to listen to my speeches and make some comments about my pronunciation and body languages. In addition, I will make some sentences which include the words that I mispronounced and practice it every day until I can say it consistently.

Reflection

Content
I have summarizied the author's thesis and responded two key points. In the end of video, I concluded my response.

Nonverbal Behavior
I think my facial expression was OK, but I could not find the camera lens so that I did not focus on my audience well. More over, I did not have gestures.

Grammar, Pronunciation, Voice,& Pace
I did not pronunce the sounds /ə/ and /ð/ properly. My voice was not very relaxed and fluent because I were a little nervous. What's more, I had so many pauses during the process.

Goals for Future Video Logs
I think that nonverbal behavior can be improved by practice. And pronunciation is the most important problem for me now. I even did not notice my pronunciation problems before. Therefore, recording my speech is a good way to check myself. I will re-play it many times in the future, and fix my problems as I find them. The next time, I can pay more attention to these problems and make progress.

Reflection
Content
I summarized the author's thesis and tried to respone to 2 of the author's key points. I also made a conclusion at the end of my video log to show the author's thesis again.

Nonverbal Behaviour
I tried to focus on my audience, and tried to see the camera, but I found it was hard for me, as I am a little camera shy. Thus, in this section I did not have much facial expressions. In terms of body language, I used my body languages to stress the key points in my video log. Next time I will try to give a better video log.

Critique and Future Goals
In this video log, my strength is I covered all the content requirments. And my weakness is I did not have a rich facial expression or body language. Also, there are some pronunciation mistakes in my speech such as: something, isolating. In my future video logs I will practice difficult sounds for more times, and be more active in my video log.

Grammar, Pronunciation, Voice, & Pace
In terms of gramma, I should have a comma between productivity and turnover, as I did not know they are two different aspects. Also I made a mistake in "everyone have different taste", I should change it into everyone has different tastes. When mentioned Pronuncitation, I made mistakes in something and isolating, I mis-pronunced "something" and "isolating". In this video log, my voice is a bit low, and the pace is a bit fast. Next time I will pay more attentions on these problems.

Goals for Future Video Logs
In my future speeches, I will practice the words that mis- pronounced times by times before I come to front, instead of avoiding using these words, I will try my best to correct my bad pronunciations on these words. I will looking for a native speaker for help. I will try to make sure that I will not miss the syllables and word endings, also try to make sure that I will not add extra syllables in the words. I will check these words from dictionary.com, and record my speech and replay it to myself. Highlight the most frequent mistakes that I made, and pay attention to them in my daily life.

Reflection for video log #1
(Sean Shi)

Content:
Firstly, at the beginning of the video, I summarized the author’s thesis that music can change workers to be more productive. Secondly, I presented the author’s main ideas through 3 aspects: music can make workers more efficient and creative; music is applicable for all the workers; music can produce a private zone for every worker. At last, I concluded my response, and showed my own idea about this topic.

Nonverbal Behavior
In the video, I think I could focus on my audiences mostly. However, in the last part, I did not do it well. Furthermore, I think I need to improve my facial expression and gestures. In the video, my face was peaceful all the time. Maybe, I should add some facial expressions to help me to express. At the same time, I cannot find many proper body languages for this video. I really hope to learn more from the teachers about the skills of recording a video like this.

Grammar, Pronunciation, Voice, & Pace:
In the video, I have made some mistakes. Firstly, I have some grammar errors. I used “equality” as “quality”. I wanted to present the meaning of “quality” but I spoke “equality”. Furthermore, it should be “in the artistic field” rather than “in the art field”. Secondly, my pronunciation still has some problems. I cannot judge the stress well, especially in the word “communication”. Moreover, when I am reading the long words, I cannot read them well at the first time, such as “phenomenon”. Thirdly, I think my voice is not clear and relaxed enough. Sometimes, because of the tension, I cannot control my voice. At last, in my mind, my pace is acceptable.

Goals for Future Video Log Goals:
At first, I need to add more body language and facial expressions. I can learn this from my teachers and classmates. Then, I should do my best to avoid the grammar and pronunciation errors. Next time, I also need to improve my confidence in order to make my voice better.

Reflection

Content
I summarized the author's thesis and responded some key points. In the end of video, I make a conclusion.

Nonverbal Behavior
I think my facial expression was still ok, and I could focus on the camera. However, I did not have gestures.

Grammar, Pronunciation, Voice,& Pace
I did not pronunce the sounds /t/ and /ð/ properly. My voice was a little bit nervous and fluent. I will try my best to improve it for the future speeches.

Goals for Future Video Logs
I think that nonverbal behavior can still be improved by doing more practice. My pronunciation is the most important problem to me. I did not notice my pronunciation issue before. Thus, recording my speech is a good way to know myself. I m gonna re-play it many times, and fix my problems. For the next time, I can pay more attention to these problems.

Video Log #1

Video Log #1

Hello Everyone!

In this class you will be completing 3 different video logs on various subjects. Altogether, these video responses and reflections are worth 20% of your final mark. Your first video log and reflection are based on "iPod Isolation", an article by Barbara Rose in the Seattle Times.

These are the steps to follow in order to complete this assignment:
1. Read the following article:
http://seattletimes.com/html/businesstechnology/2002904843_ipods02.html

2. Next, record yourself with a webcam responding to the view in the article. Your video should be between 3-4 minutes long. Clearly summarize the writer's thesis; respond (share your opinion) to at least one of her points; and conclude the response. Make sure you use appropriate transitions (ie. first, second, third, in conclusion).

3. After you record yourself, listen to the recording and reflect on your response using the PMP Video Log Reflection handout.

4. Make sure that you post your video on this blog so that I can watch it.

This response is DUE: Tuesday, February 4th (by the beginning of class)

Please email me if you have any questions! Lesley
